February 2007

I can’t believe I am going to have to bury another one of my dogs. She was a damn good lab. Her name is Rosie. I never thought that a dog could be as well behaved as she has shown me in the past. I have never had a problem with her. I could roam all over the ranch barefooted if I wanted too. Because I knew that she was going to make sure that there was nothing in my path that would harm me.

I am so pissed off that I don’t know what I am going to do but I am going to do something. I just can’t sit here and watch them get picked off one by one. I guess am going to do some coyote hunting or trapping. I guess I will be checking out some laws when it comes to these coyote’s about capturing these wild animals. Have them relocated
if I am allowed to trap them. I don’t know, I guess I will check out all that I find on this subject. I guess Texas Game & Wildlife is going to be my best search.

In the seven years that I have lived here in this area of rural America. I never thought that it would come down to this.
The last two years this area of Texas and most of the state has gone through a sever drought the likes that my eyes have never seen before.  2006, seemed to be the worst year here at the ranch it started looking like the dust bowl from pictures that I recall in my history books. On my land it is covered in mesquite tree’s and they were dying, even weeds that had high tolerances to the drought were giving up an dying. Every plant as far as the eye can see is dying and drying. It looked like the dead of winter but this is summer. I watched our pond dry up and watched the other man-made ponds cease to exist and blend in with the baked landscape of south Texas. It was like watching global warming before my eyes up close and personal.

County after county went into water restrictions and burn bans went into effect state wide. It didn’t matter what kind of fire you set, if you got caught that the penalty was going to hit your wallet hard. Especially when the burn bans came directly from the Gov. Rick Perry. All I know is that when the drought hit this area last year wild life seemed more scarce then any previous time that I can recall. I have seen less snakes and rabbits last year and this year it is even less then before.  I have seen more coyote’s as road kill in the past few weeks.  Then it makes me wonder are the coyote’s getting braver and going into peoples yards an snatching up the pets?  I have also been seeing more lost pet flyers posted around town.

I think why now are the coyotes attacking the cattle and or calves. Cause the rabbit’s and other wildlife are scarce due to the drought, or have moved on to more suitable areas for them to survive. I don’t understand when I tell the neighbors that coyotes are the ones that are killing the cattle and calves. But, instead of listening to what I have to tell them they have taken it on there own to shoot and ask questions later and my dogs are paying the price with their lives. They have managed to kill off a few of my favorite ones. I am so pissed off at them for not listening to me. I have been woken up as 18 dogs are piercing the air with their howling and barking. I am surprised that they don’t wake anyone else up to come and see what all the commotion is all about. They see what they want to see and they see what is left from what the coyotes did and my dogs just finish what they have not eaten. So my dogs are not winning this battle. I have explained this to the local sheriff and police department. If the neighbors are going to see what they want to see and there is not much that I can do about it. Texas law favors the cattle then the dog, again I loose.

When I hear shots going off I know they are shooting at my dogs or dogs that belong to other people. I cringe at the shear thought that I have lost another good dog. I am willing to give them away then to have them killed if that is what it is going to take to save their lives.

This could happen to you.
I was barely sitting down when I heard a voice from the other stall saying:

“Hi, how are you?”

I’m not the type to start a conversation in the restroom but I don’t
know what got into me, so I answered, somewhat embarrassed,

“Doin’ just fine!”

And the other person says:  “So what are you up to?”
What kind of question is that? At that point, I’m thinking this is too bizarre so I say:
“Uhhh, I’m like you, just traveling!”

At this point I am just trying to get out as fast as I can when I hear another question.

“Can I come over?”

Ok, this question is just too weird for me but I figured I could just be polite and end the conversation. I tell him
“No……..I’m a little busy right now!!!”

Then I hear the person say nervously…
“Listen, I’ll have to call you back. There’s an idiot in the other stall who keeps answering all my questions”
